ANC or ENC: What You Actually Get at Every Price in India

These two acronyms are printed on nearly every earbud box in India, they differ by one letter, and they do completely different jobs. Shops rarely explain the difference because the confusion sells more units.

The difference in one line

ANC quiets the world for you. ENC cleans your voice for them.

Active Noise Cancellation uses microphones on the outside of the earbud to sample surrounding noise, then plays an inverted version of that sound into your ear so the two cancel. You hear less of the aeroplane, the traffic, the fan.

Environmental Noise Cancellation, sometimes branded ENx, works on the outgoing side. It uses microphones to isolate your voice from the background so the person on the call hears you rather than the road. It changes nothing about what you hear.

A pair with ENC and no ANC is not a quiet listening experience. It is a clearer phone call.

What each price actually buys in India

Under ₹1,000: ENC only

Everything here is ENC or ENx. The boAt Airdopes 163 at ₹799 and Airdopes 138 at ₹899 both sit in this band. If a listing at this price claims active noise cancellation, treat the whole listing sceptically.

₹1,000 to ₹2,000: entry ANC appears

Real ANC starts here, usually rated 25 to 32dB. The boAt Nirvana Lucid at ₹1,799 offers 32dB. At this level ANC works well on steady low-frequency noise such as a fan, an engine or a train, and much less well on speech.

₹2,000 to ₹3,500: ANC that earns its name

The boAt Nirvana Ion ANC Pro at ₹2,199 gives 32dB hybrid adaptive ANC plus LDAC for higher-resolution audio. The boAt Nirvana 751 ANC over-ear at ₹3,299 does it with the physical advantage of a full ear cup, which passively blocks a great deal before the electronics do anything.

How to read the dB number honestly

A 32dB rating is a peak figure at the frequency where the system works best, usually somewhere between 100 and 300Hz. It does not mean everything gets 32dB quieter. Human speech sits mostly between 500Hz and 4kHz, where ANC is far weaker. That is why ANC flattens engine noise beautifully and barely touches an office conversation.

Which should you actually buy

• You mostly take calls outdoors or on the move. Prioritise ENC quality. ANC does nothing for the person listening to you.
• You commute by train, bus or flight. ANC is worth the money. This is the noise it handles best.
• You work in a noisy open office. Over-ear with ANC beats in-ear, because the cup blocks the speech frequencies ANC struggles with.
• You want to hear traffic while walking. Buy something with a transparency mode, and use it.
