India's appraisal cycle clusters at the end of the financial year in March, with communication landing through April. It is the second gifting window after Diwali, and it works differently because the gift attaches to individual performance rather than a festival.
Separate the gift from the increment
A recognition gift handed over in the same conversation as a salary revision gets absorbed into the compensation discussion and loses its own meaning. Give it separately, ideally in a team setting where the recognition is visible.
Tier by category, not by price
If your top tier is simply a more expensive version of the standard gift, the ladder reads as a public ranking. Different categories at each level read as choice: earbuds at one level, a smartwatch at the next, a soundbar or projector at the top.
Household gifts for the top tier
For annual and long-service awards, a household item outperforms a personal one. A soundbar or projector is seen by the family and keeps the recognition alive well past the quarter, which a personal gadget in a bag does not.
Budget planning before 31 March
Recognition spend booked in the current financial year needs the invoice dated before 31 March. If your gifting is part of the year's budget, place the order in February with delivery in early March. Leaving it to the last week means competing with every other company doing the same thing.
Documentation
Keep the GST invoice against each award record. Where the award is made under a documented recognition policy rather than as a discretionary gift, that distinction matters for how it sits in your books. Confirm the treatment with your accountant.
Lead times
Plain stocked models dispatch the same evening when ordered before 4pm on a working day. Engraved awards add roughly five to seven working days after proof approval, so a March handover means a February order.
