Client Gifting Etiquette in India: What to Send and What to Avoid

Client gifts carry commercial and compliance weight. Value thresholds, branding decisions, timing and the categories that create awkwardness.

A client gift is read more carefully than an employee gift. It signals how you see the relationship, and in regulated sectors it can create a compliance problem for the recipient.

Check the recipient's gift policy first

Banks, listed companies, public sector organisations and multinationals frequently cap the value of gifts an employee may accept, often around ₹2,000 to ₹5,000, and some prohibit gifts entirely. Sending something above the cap forces the recipient to decline or declare it, which is the opposite of goodwill. When in doubt, ask their office.

Do not brand a senior client gift

Your logo on a gift to a client turns appreciation into advertising. Put the brand on the card, not the product. This inverts the rule for employee and channel gifting, where branding is welcome.

Categories that work

Neutral, high-utility gadgets: a good Bluetooth speaker, premium ANC headphones, a well-made power bank. These are used, not displayed, and they carry no implication about the recipient's taste or personal life.

Categories that create awkwardness

Wearables sized to the body. Anything requiring an account or subscription in the recipient's name. Anything that reveals you researched their personal life. Highly personal categories read as familiarity that a commercial relationship has not earned.

Timing

Diwali is the natural window in India and carries no obligation implication. Gifts arriving immediately before a tender decision or contract renewal can look like influence regardless of intent. If a procurement decision is pending, wait until it has concluded.

Invoicing and record

Keep the GST invoice and record the recipient organisation. If your own compliance team is ever asked about client hospitality, having the record already assembled saves considerable difficulty.
