Seven Corporate Gifting Mistakes That Waste the Budget
The failures that repeat every year, and what each one actually costs in unused gifts and internal goodwill.
Most gifting budgets are not wasted on the wrong category. They are wasted on avoidable process failures. These seven repeat every year.
1. Starting branded orders three weeks before Diwali
Artwork, proof approval, production and dispatch do not compress. Branded orders realistically need two to three weeks minimum, and stock of the model you wanted disappears in October. Start in early September.
2. Buying an aspirational category at a budget price
A poor smartwatch is worse than a good pair of earbuds at the same money. Recipients compare within the category, not across categories. If the budget will not buy a decent version of a visible product, change category.
3. Buying bright colours in bulk
Colourways that look striking on an order sheet sit unused on wrists. Neutral finishes have the highest actual-use rate for gifts nobody chose.
4. Ignoring the recipient's gift policy
Sending a client something above their organisation's acceptance cap forces them to decline or declare it. Check before sending, particularly in banking, public sector and listed companies.
5. No buffer stock
Units arrive damaged, staff join after the count was frozen, and someone loses theirs. Two to three percent buffer costs very little and prevents a scramble.
6. Losing the invoice
Warranty runs from the invoice date. When a unit fails at month eight, an HR team without the invoice has no claim. Keep the GST invoice attached to the gifting record.
7. Buying grey-market stock to stretch the budget
The saving is real and so is the consequence. Unauthorised stock has no manufacturer warranty and no service path, and the failure lands on your employee or client in another city with no paperwork. The saving is rarely worth the reputational cost.
The pattern behind all seven
Each one is a decision made to save time or money at the point of purchase, which costs more later. Fixing the timeline fixes most of them.
