Custom Branding on Corporate Gifts: Engraving vs Printed Packaging

Which gadgets take a logo well, which do not, what artwork format is needed, and the lead time buyers consistently underestimate.

Branding a corporate gift is where a straightforward order becomes a project. The decisions are simple, but the lead time is not, and that is what catches buyers out.

Laser engraving

Engraving works on metal and hard plastic bodies: power banks, metal-bodied speakers, pens, and some smartwatch cases. It is permanent and it looks considered. It is monochrome by nature, so a multi-colour logo becomes a single-tone mark. Test how your logo reads without colour before committing.

What engraves badly

Soft-touch rubberised finishes, textured fabric surfaces, and anything with a curved face smaller than the mark. Earbud cases are usually too small and too curved for a clean result.

Printed packaging and sleeves

For earbuds and smartwatches, the practical route is branding the box rather than the product: a printed sleeve, a custom gift box, or an insert card. This keeps full colour, costs less per unit, and avoids voiding anything on the product itself. It is also the only sensible option when the recipient may want to use the gadget without a company logo on it, which is more common than gifting teams assume.

Artwork requirements

Send vector artwork, ideally AI, EPS, SVG or a vector PDF. A PNG lifted from a website will not engrave cleanly at any size. Include the exact Pantone or hex values for printed work, and state clearly which version of the logo is approved for a single-colour mark.

The lead time nobody budgets for

Artwork to proof is one to two working days. Proof approval depends on your side, and this is usually the longest step. Production after approval is roughly five to seven working days depending on quantity, then dispatch. Realistically, a branded order needs two to three weeks from first contact to delivery. Plain stock ships the same evening.

When not to brand

Client gifting at senior level. A branded logo on a gift to a client can read as advertising rather than appreciation. A premium unbranded gadget with a good card usually lands better.
