How to Set a Corporate Gifting Budget Per Employee

Most gifting committees pick a number that feels right rather than one that is actually right. A working method for setting the budget before choosing the gift.

The order most gifting committees get wrong is picking the gift before fixing the budget. Fix the number first; the category follows from it, not the other way round.

Start from total spend, not per-head guess

Divide the total gifting budget approved for the occasion by the confirmed headcount, including a two to three percent buffer for late joiners and replacements. This gives a real per-head figure rather than an aspirational one.

Segment by role only if the difference is meaningful

A flat per-head budget across the whole company is simplest and avoids resentment. Tiering by seniority is defensible only when the tiers are wide enough to feel like genuinely different categories, not marginally different prices of the same product.

Benchmark against last year, adjusted for inflation

Electronics prices move, sometimes down as models age, sometimes up on new launches. Re-check current pricing for the exact models you gifted last year rather than assuming the same budget buys the same gift.

Leave room for the branding line item separately

If you want custom branding, budget for it as a separate line rather than eating into the product budget, since branding costs do not scale the same way product costs do at volume.
