How Smartwatch and Earbud Warranty Claims Actually Work in India
What is covered, what is not, what to carry to a service centre, and what to do when a claim is refused.
Warranty is the part of the purchase nobody thinks about until it matters, and by then the useful decisions have already been made.
Who you claim from
On a genuine product bought from an authorised source, you claim from the brand, not the shop. boAt, Noise, realme and Fire-Bolt all run their own service networks in India. You take the unit to an authorised service centre, or raise a request on the brand's site and they arrange a pickup.
The seller's job is to have given you a valid invoice and genuine stock. After that the brand carries the obligation.
This matters because it means you are not dependent on the shop staying in business, being reachable, or feeling cooperative.
What you need to carry
- The invoice. Dated, with the seller's details. This establishes when the warranty started. A clear photograph is normally accepted.
- The product with its serial number intact. If the sticker has peeled off, the claim gets difficult.
- The box, if you still have it. Not always required but it speeds things up.
What is covered
Manufacturing defects, for the stated period, usually 12 months on audio and wearables. In practice that means:
- A bud that stops charging or stops pairing
- Buttons or touch controls that stop responding
- Display faults on a watch that are not impact damage
- Battery that fails outright, as opposed to gradually holding less charge
- Charging cases that stop delivering power
What is not covered
- Physical damage. Cracked display, crushed case, a bud that went through a wash cycle.
- Water damage beyond the rating. IPX4 means splash resistant. It does not mean you can swim in it, and most devices carry an internal moisture indicator that tells the technician exactly what happened.
- Normal battery decline. A battery holding less charge after 14 months is wear, not a defect.
- Unauthorised repair. If someone has opened it, the warranty is finished.
- Consumables. Ear tips, cables and straps are usually excluded.
How long it takes
A walk-in service centre can often assess a small audio product the same day and either replace it or send it for repair. Pickup requests through a brand's website generally run 7 to 14 days end to end. Replacement is more common than repair on lower-priced audio, because repairing a sealed earbud is uneconomic.
If a claim is refused
Ask for the reason in writing. Refusals usually cite physical damage, water ingress or a serial that does not register. Each of those is checkable.
If the serial does not register, the product may not be genuine, and that is a matter for the seller rather than the brand. This is the point at which people discover that a marketplace bargain had no invoice behind it.
If you believe the refusal is wrong, escalate to the brand's customer care with photographs and the written reason, and keep the service centre's job number. If it goes further, the National Consumer Helpline on 1915 and the consumer commission process exist for exactly this.
What to do before you buy
- Confirm the product is genuine and the serial registers.
- Get a GST invoice in your own name and keep a copy in your email.
- Register the product on the brand's site if they offer it, which fixes the purchase date in their records.
- Check where your nearest authorised service centre is. Coverage is thinner outside metros for some brands.
Frequently asked questions
Do I claim warranty from the shop or the brand?
From the brand, at any authorised service centre in India. The seller's responsibility is to supply genuine stock with a valid dated invoice. You do not need to return to the original shop.
What documents do I need for a warranty claim?
A dated invoice showing the seller's details, and the product with its serial number intact. A clear photograph or PDF of the invoice is normally accepted.
Is water damage covered under warranty?
No. Water resistance ratings such as IPX4 or IPX5 describe splash and rain resistance, not immersion, and devices carry internal moisture indicators that reveal water ingress. Damage beyond the rating is excluded.
Does a weakening battery count as a defect?
Gradual capacity loss over months is considered normal wear and is not covered. A battery that fails outright or will not charge at all is a defect and is covered.
What if the service centre says my serial number is invalid?
That usually means the product is not genuine, which is an issue with the seller rather than the brand. Ask for the refusal in writing and take it up with whoever sold it to you. Buying from an authorised distributor with a GST invoice avoids this situation entirely.
