Why a 10,000mAh power bank does not deliver 10,000mAh, what wattage to insist on, and why battery age matters in a bulk order.
Power banks are the default choice when headcount is high and budget per piece is low, and they are a good choice. But the headline number on the box is the least useful number on the box.
Why 10,000mAh is not 10,000mAh
The cells inside run at about 3.7 volts. USB output is 5 volts or higher. Converting between them loses energy, and so does the charging circuit in the phone. Real delivered capacity is typically 60 to 70 percent of the rating. A 10,000mAh bank realistically gives a 5,000mAh phone about one and a half charges, not two.
Wattage matters more than capacity
For gifting, output wattage decides satisfaction more than capacity does. An 18W or 22.5W bank charges a phone usefully fast. A 10W bank feels slow regardless of how large it is. If the recipients carry laptops, look for USB-C Power Delivery at 45W or above.
Battery age in bulk orders
Lithium cells degrade on the shelf whether or not they are used. In a bulk order this matters: a batch manufactured eighteen months ago will underperform from day one and fail sooner. Ask the supplier about the batch date before committing to a large quantity. This is a question grey-market sellers dislike.
Weight and portability
A 20,000mAh bank is heavy enough that many recipients leave it at home, which defeats the purpose. For general staff gifting, 10,000mAh is the practical sweet spot. Reserve 20,000mAh for field staff and travellers who actually need it.
Safety and compliance
Insist on BIS-certified units from brands with a service network. Power banks are one of the few gift categories with a genuine safety dimension, and a cheap uncertified cell in the hands of 300 employees is not a risk worth taking to save a small amount per unit.
